Openness to experience describes the ability to engage with new ideas, perceptions, and experiences without immediately rejecting them or filtering them through rigid interpretations. It supports cognitive flexibility, curiosity, and the capacity to revise internal models of reality when new information becomes available. As openness increases, fixed assumptions lose their dominance and are replaced by a more adaptive perception of experience. What does not align with current perceptual frameworks is gradually given less emphasis. What remains is a more accurate and flexible understanding of reality. In the world we live in today, this capacity has become increasingly important as external conditions continue to change at a rapid pace. Technological, social, and economic developments have made traditional frameworks of orientation less reliable than before. At the same time, the amount of available information continues to grow, requiring the ability to evaluate new inputs thoughtfully rather than react to them automatically. Many of today’s challenges are complex and cannot be understood through simple, linear models. Openness supports the ability to consider multiple perspectives simultaneously and to move flexibly between them. As a result, learning becomes a continuous process. Adaptability increasingly serves as a foundation for psychological orientation, complementing and often surpassing the stability provided by fixed assumptions.
